Holiday Writing

Holiday Writing
In the holidays I went to my cousin 21st, it was held at the pub, there was over 120 people invited but it felt like more then that showed up. It started at 7:00pm and the pub got closed at 11:00pm then we was all invited back to Liam's house.

We finally got to where the party was, when we showed up there wasn't much people there to start with but through out the night it got very crowded. There was about only 10 children there and the rest was either family or Liam's mates. It was very very loud which caused a headache, there was heaps of people drinking. If there was anyone drinking they got given a green wrist band so they got cheaper drinks at the bare, of course us children didn't have the green bands as we wasn't aloud to drink.

My favourite part was when the time came to do the speeches and cake, it started with his parents doing the speeches, then Liam's mates went up and did some speeches. There was heaps of embarrassing things said about Liam. Then we got onto the cake and everyone singed happy birthday, after that Liam cut the cake and everyone went up at different times if they wanted a peace of  cake.

The only part I didn't enjoy through out the holidays also at the party was my brother was very annoying and wouldn't leave me alone. Other then that I had a very good  holidays.

We also went to Thomas park and the beach with all my cousins for the day, I got to look after my baby cousin who was only 1 year old. It was very hot so we went to the park first and which also had  a skate park there, then had lunch and headed to the beach but got to cold so we all went back home to our houses as we had other things to do. I really enjoyed having my uncle come and go on the skate park with me.

New Kahui - Tieke

New Kahui - Tieke
This week on Monday we moved into our new buildings/Kahui's. It took about 2 years to build the whole school, our classrooms and the learning commons and also the learning stream. There are 3 names for each building that was made. They are called Tieke, Mahua and Riroriro. We are in Tieke. We got the chance to look around each classroom.

When I walked into our new buildings I saw...

When I walked into our building first  ( Tieke ) I instantly noticed the lights that glow up behind each T.V, also how we have a teared setting area to sit when where on the mat, we got to go through each classroom they are basically layed out all the same but the tables are different ways and some are on the other side. Also that outside our building there if a fake grass area with a hill that people like sitting on in our brake times, also that outside our building there still building a stage.

When I walked into our new buildings I thought...

I thought that it looked really small and how could we fight 2 classrooms into the space, but also thought it was cool how it's layed out. Once we got both classrooms in, it didn't look that small.
When we went and looked at the other buildings I thought one was bigger then the other but some building have class rooms placed in different areas.

When I walked into our new buildings I felt...

I felt surprised as it nothing how I pictured the building to be, and also how open the spaces are with other classrooms and rooms inside on massive building that there no doors its all opened plan, also that each building has a different coloured in the buildings.

I really like the buildings and each one is layed out also that there not all connected they have like a lane between each building and that we get to work with another class not just one class in one.

Art - hurumanu

Art
On Monday we had our hurumnau art, well the 2 period of art we had we had to get our background finished and all our characters for our stop motion finished.
Sadly my group didn't get up to the background part so we will do it next time we have art but we did get all our charterers finished. Here is some of the picture of our charterers.

Hurumanu- Science Solar Energy

Solar Energy

Aim: To find out which colour attracts the suns heat.

Hypothesis:

I think the black cup will get the hottest because I know wearing black clouths in the sun you get hotter than normal, also because black attracts the sun the most.

Materials:

  1.  2x  Styrofoam cups
  2.  Tin foil
  3. Black plastic bag
  4. Heat lamps
  5. White paper
  6. plastic cup
  7. thermometer

Steps

  1.  Get the materials
  2.  Put the tin foil inside a cup and also put black paper around another cup.
  3.  Put water inside all of the 3 cups.
  4.  Shine the  light onto all 3 of the cups.
  5.   Wait for 15 minutes then put a thermometer inside all 3  cups and see the tempter.
  6. Record the temperature.
  7.  Wait another 30 minutes then see the results after that.
  8. Record the temperature.
  9.  Then wait 45 minutes and then see  the results after that.
  10. Record the temperature.

Findings:

In this Photo we have 2 Styrofoams cups and one plastic cup, we have put water in each cups and used a heat lamp to shine onto all 3 off the cups and then we have waited 15 mins and then put the thermometer into each cup and see the results.

Conclusion

After getting everything set up and into place, and waited up to around 45 minutes to see all the results we have came to black  is the hottest one. Which this proves that  black get's the hottest when the sun is shining onto something that is black .

Documentary- 2040

Documentary- 2040
This afternoon 4 classes watch a clip about this guy names Damon Gameau who wants to make the world a better place so it's better for his daughter to grow up in, he travelled around the world and went to different schools and asked each child what would they like to see in the future . They was talking about climate change most of the answer was about having clean water, not lots of rubbish around like there is now days.  I learned that what is happening around us what climate change is doing to us and our plant.

What Surprised me?
What surprised me was the answer's that each child said for what they want to see in the future and what ideas this guy had, about have cars and how them drive by themselves without you controlling the car. The climate change in our world and how bad it actually is and just little things we can do which can change heaps in the future.

What Excited me?
What excited me was that us just doing a little change just by picking up rubbish and putting it into a bin can change a lot in the future, also with the rubbish side of it, it makes it easier for us to have more clean water and now dirty gross water.

What Worried me?
I think that watching this documentary worried me the most is what is happening in our life and around the world, with the climate change how it's affecting how health and life really bad. Also what is worrying me if what happens if it counties like this in the future and no one makes a change and it stays like this what will happen to our world? to us..?

I think.. what I would like to see in 2040 is everyone living a happy life, having clean water, clean plant  and that we have made a difference in the world.

Manaakitanga

Manaakitanga
My group is using clay to make our characters, our story has aliens and humans in it and we are showing manaakitanga as how bob and jeff ( Bob human & Jeff alien ) as they become mates and stop the whole fighting and arguing.
They are fighting because they had mistaken both of there cultures.
Im find it really challenging to work with the people i'm working with and getting all the work done in time also making sure the character are the way we want them.
Here is a photo of 2 the aliens we have made.

League

League
Yesterday afternoon a group of us got the opportunity to verse St Thomas in a game of league in period 5 at our school on the field.  There was 13 of us students that got to have the option to join in or not, most of us said yes we would love to but some said no so we had to find some other players to have enough on the field.

The game started at 2 o'clock at period 5, we didn't really have the chance to train or anything as of us all racing around trying to find people to play, so the advantage as St Thomas was already out on the field training.  Also they had 17 players so the had reserves but we didn't have any reserves as there only 13 on the field, so we ended up playing a full game.

We started the first half unfortunately St Thomas getting a try already within at least the first 10 minutes, it basically was try after try then finally we ended up getting a try and that was the first half over. It was 4 try's to St Thomas and 1 to us Hornby.  We had a team talk and everything  and then went back onto the field in the second half which turned out we had 5 try's within at least the 15 minutes into the second half.  Then we was winning just by 1 point but unfortunately St Thomas came back and took the win 58-28 to them.

Most of us was  disappointed with the result, but we gotta remember it was the first ever time we have done this at Hornby High and also we didn't have any time to train.

I really enjoyed playing league and versing another school not just our own school, I think it was a great to know how everyone how plays and where each person strong points are out on the field and just working as a team.

Ella West Vist

Ella West Vist
This morning in period 1 at school today we had the pleasure of meeting Ella West the author.
Ella West is a amazing writing she has write heaps of books but the main ones we was looking at today was Night Vision and Rain Fall. Her main job is being a journalist.
A fact about Ella West when she became a writing it took her 3 years to write her very first book, now it only takes her 2 months to her book done and write 50,000 words.

Ella spoke a bit about her book Night Vision, and Rain Fall.
I haven't personally read Night Vision and Rain Fall myself but what other people been saying it sound really interesting.

Night Vision is a about a murder, and a young girl who has this horrible sickness which make her not be able to go outside as her skin gets blister and everything if she sees sun or even just light in general. She gets these special glasses to wear at night time and she can see all sort of things in the dark, this is why the book is called Night Vision. She goes out to a farm which is right next to a forest and ends up going in the forest and there a car light on fire and everything and that becomes the crime.

Rain Fall is also another book which has a crime in it. Rain Fall is about a missing neighbour a missing boy which equals a murder. It's a bout these two young kids who ride horses along the beach each day. There also a murder that happens and brings all these new people to the children town. The kids both ride horses but then she finds out the truth about everything.

I really enjoyed getting the option to listen to Ella West speak about her books, and give us some information for us to have interest in the books for us wanting to go and read her books.
I like learning about heaps of information I never knew about.

Hurumanu - Science: Water Cycle

Science
The past few weeks we have been doing Science, we have done 3 experiments so far.
Our first one was where we had to draw the water cycle onto a plastic bag and then add all these things into the bag and also did another one for 2 big added more things.
Climate Chaos

Title

The water cycle

Purpose

To see how the water cycle works

Materials

Ex1.
Vivid
Plastic bag
Cold water
Blue food die
A person to draw the water cycle

Ex2.
Vivid
Plastic bag
Cold water
Blue food die
A person to draw the water cycle
Baking soda
Litmus paper

Steps

  1. Get one Plastic bag
  2. Get one vivid
  3. Draw the Water cycle one time on the plastic
  4. Go to the teacher
  5. Put 3 cm of water cold water
  6. Put 2 drops of blue food die
  7. Close the bag
  8. Get two pieces of double-sided tape
  9. Give the bag to the teacher
  10. hang it up on a window that has sunlight

  1. Exp2.
  2. Get one Plastic bag
  3. Get one vivid
  4. Draw the Water cycle one time on the plastic
  5. Go to the teacher
  6. Put 3 cm of water cold water
  7. Put 2 drops of blue food die
  8. Put one teaspoon of baking soda
  9. Get one piece of litmus paper
  10.  Close the bag
  11. Get two pieces of double-sided tape
  12. Give the bag to the teacher
  13. hang it up on a window that has sunlight

Conclusion

Exp1.
I think the outcome of this experiment will be, I think the bag will turn out a different colour to show that it is working. Or the blue food colouring will disappear out of the bag because of the water cycle.

exp2. I think the same for this experiment it will either the colour will disappear. The food colouring will change colour. There is baking soda in the second experiment I think that the water will disappear out of the bag.

First we draw the water cycle on the bag and then we filled up with water and then we put food diet and we close the bag and we got double-sided tape we put it on there for a while and then we took it off and then we gave it to me she harder to hang it up on the window that has somewhat so the water cycle would start to work.

The Water Cycle: Bag 1
CO2 Water Cycle: Bag 2
Acid
Desert Water Cycle
Bag 3
Does it cycle?
Small - Bag 1 did cycle. I give this a 2 = small because it did show the cycle but not a big amount of it. Small - Bag 2 doesn't cycle, I choose a 2 for this one because it didn't really cycle  but still had a fair enough amount  of water left over.
Amount of Water
Small - There is still a small decent about of water left in the bag. Small - There was still heaps of water left over in the bag.
Acidity
None - because it had no Acid in it. Small- There was a little bit of acid in there it works sort of and changed the colour of the paper we put into the bag.

Key: Water and acidity amount: 1 = none
2 = small
3 = large

Conclusion: In bag 1 after waiting couple weeks to see if anything changes, bag 1 did show the water cycle but I gave it a 2 ( Small ) because didn't have a big amount of it showing, but for water cycle 2 it didn't show the water cycle as much as bag 1 did but did still have a fair enough of water left over so I give it a 2, I really enjoyed this as was fun to do and learn about our water cycle.

C.I.P

C.I.P
In C.I.P today a group of us got the chance to cut the Ivy off the trees.
We got the chance to use some tools to cut the Ivy off the trees instead of us having to use our hands.  Some of the tools we got to use, was from one off our teachers that have kindly let us use, and some of the other tools was the schools or either donated to us.   The reason we are cutting the Ivy off all the trees is because the Ivy grows really fast, also the trees are really hard and very old. The main reason is because the Ivy is suffocating the trees and not letting the sun get to them.

In the morning on Wednesday's our class does Kiwi Kaha,
today in Kiwi Kaha we got given a word find to have done and completed by a certain amount of time but... the leaders who was taking Kiwi Kaha put music on a speaker and would through a ball around and also take our paper to try and distract us.  The main reason for this was because we was focusing on trying to avoid being distracted.

Hangi

Hangi
In Maori the past few weeks we have been learning about Hangi.
We learn that of course its made under the ground, then learnt what type of food they normally cook and how long it takes and what are the steps of make a Hangi.
After that we had to make a drawing of what the steps are of how to make the hangi and cooking the food.

Here is my drawing of the process for making one.

L.C

Learning Conference
Last week on Thursday we had our L.C we had to make a slide or a DLO showing our learning so that we can present it to our parents. In our DLO we had to put a blog post, learning story, Math, Spelling and a Task, and also our reading plus results. I didn't go to the learning conference but we still had to make a DLO explaining  what were been doing at school.

I decided to make a slide show about my work.
here is a link to my slide show I made.

Digi Tech

Digi Technology
For the past 8 weeks we have been doing Digi Technology, we had to find a issue on what to make a app abbot and find information.  My issue was drug use in the Olympics, I choose this issue as because I really enjoy sports but reading about people using drugs by cheating to make them faster or stronger I think that's a really unfair advantage for the other people who haven't cheating and I think it should stop.

Would you stop using people from using drugs in the Olympics??

This is the app I made..

This is the learning story we had to do about Digi Technology
\

I really enjoyed this 8 weeks as i got to use new apps and games and how to find out about the sports and what has been happening around the world.

C.I.P Gardening

C.I.P Gardening
In C.I.P last week we went down to the garden and moved all the tyres and looked through the classroom to see what we can change and do. Some people started move thing's out of the classroom and the rest of us moved the tyres and started taking the dirt off the mats to lift up the mats.

In C.I.P This week we went out to our school garden and 20 people starting take everything out of the classroom and 10 other people helped cut down tree's and the rest did the gardening part. If you was in the gardening part you had to to dig up the soil, and make a row down the garden where we are going to plant some things. Then some of us went and cut down some branches from the tree's and put them into a pile's.

The reason why we dugged up the dirt is to move around the soil so then we can plate new soil that is fresh and soft, then once we place the soil into the garden the plates with grow probably.

Why did we find so much worms when we dugged up the dirt?

The reason is because earthworms spend most of their days living underground in the soil and dirt, they surface at night order to feed on organic matter. Therefore you can collect the worms at night without have to dig in the day time. A shovel or small spade to move all the soil around or turn it over.

Why are worms good for soil?

Worms help to  increase the amount of air and water that get to the soil underground. They break down the organic matter, like leaves and grass into things that plants can use. When they eat they leave behind castings that are a very valuable type of fertiliser. Worms are like free farmer help.

dodge-ball

Dodge-ball
This week we  have been playing different types of dodge-ball.
The equipment for dodge-ball you will need at least 15-20 cones,
15-20 balls, and a bench on the side for the people who get out.

How to play dodge-ball?

Have the same amount of people of each side to make the teams fair,
have the cones and balls in the middle with the ball on top of the cones then once the referee or teacher or someone blow the whistle to start the game everyone runs up to the middles and try grab the ball and aim for the other team.

How to get the other team out?
You have to catch the ball on the full or either hit the other players with the ball.

3 clever tips for dodge-ball?
1st one is to try and avoid the ball and dodge the ball.
2st one is you could use the ball in your  hand to hit the other ball to stop it from hitting you.
3rd one is if you are a good catcher then you could catch the ball on the full and get the other team out.

Here is another way to play dodge-ball.

1. 2 teams standing on the bench.
2. Run in on whistle to get the ball.
3. Reset back to green line before throwing the ball.
4. You get " out " by being hit on the full ( no bounce ) with a dodge-ball.
5. You can also get someone out by catching their ball on the "full".
6. When you get out you move to the opposite side of the gym.
7. To get back in your team mate has to throw you the ball & you catch it or hit the Bball hoop.
8. NO face shots!
9. Be honest!

Tapu Ae

Tapu Ae
What is Tapu Ae?
Tapu ae is a traditional Māori ball game. It is an adaptation of ki-o-rahi to a court game, and was formalised about 1900. Today it is played on a hard surface such as a netball court. The court consists of two sides where players pass the ball aiming to knock the block in the middle of the two sides over.

What are some off the basic rules?
Step 1:  Set up your 2 teams of 7 players
Step 2:  Set up the cones on the court and put the 6 tennis balls on the cones of each of the 2 halves of the court. Set up the power/ the zone around the ki.
Step 3: At each end of the court set up the 3 cones with the tennis balls on top, these are the tupu or targets.
Step 4: Make a circle with 6 more cones around each tupu one at each end of the court.
Step 5: Set up 3 third of the courts with 18 cones.
Step 6:  Find out what position you are playing
Step 7:  Start playing and try to learn new goals to improve.

What is some of the te reo Maori kupu that we talked about?
Ki-The Ball
Tupu-Target
Papa Tākaro- playing fields

What was your role in your team for these games?
My role was the warm up coach. I had to make sure my team was warmed up and did some excises and stretches before we start the game.

What did you enjoy most about the game?
I enjoyed getting out and playing and having fair teams and the teachers choosing the teams instead of us choosing them ourselves. I like versing other teams and having a competition

What were some of the drawbacks that you can think of?
Wouldn't move around enough, some was just talking and not interested in the game at all.

What could your team do better next time you play?
I think my team could do better next time, for us to all spread out and give everyone a chance with the ball and not just talking to mates and actually be interested in the game.

Revolution Tour

Revolution Tour

Image result for Revolution Tour

  • What was the best thing about the tour?
That we got the opportunity to hear a story about another person life and how they grew up, and also got to see the dance and play different sort of games with the Revolution Tour.  I liked how Reggie talked at the end about his life story and what hes been through and never judge someone with out knowing there life story or what there been through.

  • What did I learn from the Talk?
That never judge someone with out knowing there life story or what there been through, and if someone getting picked on or bullied then stand up for them. Don't just stand back and watch or you become the problem.

  • How did I feel after the talk?
It was a very emotional and upsetting talk, just listening to someone story and hearing everything there been through and imaging if I had to go through that at my age, but also knowing that just by looking at someone you can't tell what there been through or what they are going through.
